(3) Main Roads has developed plans to upgrade Great Eastern Highway to a high standard dual carriageway from Kooyong Road to Great Eastern Highway Bypass, with a central median, turning pockets, on-road cycle facilities and provision of a continuous pedestrian path. The proposed upgrade would address traffic management, safety and amenity issues and would include appropriate landscaping. (4) - (5) The timing of any improvement works will be dependent on future budget considerations and assessed against the competing needs of other high priority road work projects across the State. Given Great Eastern Highway's strategic importance of linking the Airport with the existing AusLink highway network and the State capital, the State has made a number of approaches to the Federal Government seeking a funding contribution to progress the proposed highway upgrade works. These approaches have to date been ignored, but we will continue to press the Commonwealth on this important issue.
