PILBARA CITIES — KARRATHA — CITY
STATUS
515. Mr B.J. GRYLLS to the Minister for
Local Government:
Given the government's
investment in Pilbara Cities and its efforts to raise the profile of economic
conditions in the north, can the minister please advise the house whether the
Shire of Roebourne has been successful in its bid to become a city and do all
members in the Parliament share the vision of building cities in the north?

I thank the member
for Pilbara for his ongoing efforts in this project of making Karratha a true
city in the Pilbara as part of the Pilbara Cities campaign. The member is
right, and now that Karratha's population has grown to 27 000, it is
time for a new era in local government. I look forward to going to the Pilbara
next week, because on 1 July I will announce that Karratha will become the new
city of the Pilbara. That is through the fantastic efforts of the member for
Pilbara and because this government recognised the importance of the Pilbara.
Many years ago, Karratha was a dusty mining town. It has moved on and now
provides a huge number of facilities for the community and has become a city of
the Pilbara with high-rise development, recreation centres and a super-clinic.
It has achieved city status as it has moved forward. As the Pilbara grows, it
is good to know that we have a great city in Karratha and also a very good member
who has recognised the importance of the community and the great opportunity of
recognising Karratha as a city in the Pilbara.
As the member for
Pilbara pointed out, the member for Mandurah referred to the Pilbara as a
hostile and harsh environment in which to live. That is interesting, because
the member for Mandurah recognises that we represent —
Mr D.A. Templeman interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Mandurah, I call you to order for the second time.
Minister, through the Chair.
Mr A.J. SIMPSON : I acknowledge that the member for Mandurah
and I both represent the Peel region, and I understand his commitment to the
Peel region in getting royalties for regions funding for the Peel. The member
for Dawesville and I are very strong on this too.
Several members interjected.
Mr A.J. SIMPSON : The member for Murray–Wellington
also represents the Peel region—my apologies. I look forward to going
to Karratha next week and announcing with the member for Pilbara the new city
of Karratha. It is a fantastic milestone for not only the government, but also
the Pilbara Cities project. I look forward to seeing all the commitments to the
region taken forward. The Local Government Advisory Board has given approval
and I have signed off on the commitment to make Karratha the next city in the
Pilbara.
