1419. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the Minister
for Mental Health:
I refer to the Queen Elizabeth II Medical
Centre mental health unit.
(1) Has smoking been banned in the
courtyards of the unit?
(2) If yes to (1) —
(a) did the minister approve this
decision; and, if not, who approved the decision;
(b) why was this decision made; and
(c) how are the smoking habits of
inpatients who smoke being managed?
(3) What has been the occupancy rate
of the unit since opening?

I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
(1) The smoking
exemption has not been implemented, as occupational safety and health
requirements must be satisfied to ensure that the risk of exposure to
environmental tobacco smoke by staff and other patients can be satisfactorily
managed. The occupational safety and health assessment is currently in process.
(2) (a) No. This has been an
operational matter.
(b) See the answer to (1).
(c) Nicotine
replacement therapy or other treatment options are considered as part of the consumerXXX ###XXXs treatment pathway, in consultation with
the consumer and their carers , when relevant.
(3) It is 92 per cent.
