I am advised by the Department of Education as follows:
(1) The Department of Education's
Behaviour Management in Schools
policy requires that schools take action to provide an environment free from violence and discrimination. The policy is publicly available on the Department's website (
http://www.det.wa.edu.au/policies
).
The Department's
K-10 Health and Physical Education Syllabus
and
Languages Syllabus
provide teachers with explicit advice about what students should be taught in relation to respectful relationships and intercultural understandings.
Schools implement programs to deal with inter-racial tensions at the local level, based on the
Behaviour Management in Schools
policy and the
K-10 Syllabus
.
Schools are able to access a variety of resources that provide advice, strategies and research to inform student and teacher understanding of culture, stereotypes and diversity to enable a better understanding of viewpoints on issues including reconciliation, tolerance, social justice and equality.

(b) The Department of Education has not initiated any programmes with the assistance of the Office of Multicultural Interests. However, the Department of Education has collaborated on a range of initiatives with the Office of Multicultural Interests such as:
· Harmony Week;
· the
Countering Racism Planning and Evaluation Tool for Western Australian Schools
; and
·
A World of Difference
(2) There are 14 Intensive English Centres across the North and South Metropolitan Education Regions.
(3) The Department has ensured that the assessment tools used to identify students for specialist academic schools and programs are culturally sensitive. These assessment tools were developed by the Department in consultation with Pearson Education Inc and are underpinned by evidence-based international research. The assessment process includes a non-verbal reasoning component, writing from a visual stimulus and multi-choice formatting.
