DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION — LEAVE LIABILITY
71. Hon SUE ELLERY to the Minister for
Education:
I refer to the 2013–14 Government Mid-year Financial Projections
Statement in which it is noted under ''Spending Risks'' —
The Department of Education has
indicated that despite strategies to constrain growth in leave liability, it
is unlikely to observe the cap as published in this mid-year review.
On current projections, how far
short of the cap in dollar figures will the department be at 30 June 2014?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
The Department of Education has
implemented leave management strategies to reduce its leave balances and these
are already having an impact. The major impacts will be realised over the 2014
and 2015 school years. The department has engaged an independent actuary to
independently assess the impact of these strategies on leave liability
balances, including the 30 June 2014 expected liability.
