(2) The government is aware that several lodging houses in the metropolitan area have closed in recent years and is endeavouring to address the issue. Under its Crisis Accommodation Program, the Department of Housing and Works is constructing a new 22 bed hostel in East Perth, targeting single men. The Department has plans to construct a new 40 bed lodging house in the inner city area through its Joint Venture Housing Program. This will target single people. Suitable land is being sought for this project. In addition, the Department of Housing and Works has introduced a Homeless Helpline, so that people who are homeless can make contact and discuss their housing needs. The Helpline has had significant success in finding accommodation for many homeless people.
