I refer the Premier to yesterday’s tragic events and, in doing so, express sympathy to the family and friends of the young woman who lost her life. Those events were caused by a high-risk offender on parole. (1) Does the Premier concede that his Government’s policies to deliberately reduce the prison population, to relax conditions of parole and community-based orders, and to abolish sentences of six months or less are placing the community at risk? (2) Is it not true that under this Government the number of serious offenders on our streets, rather than in prison, has increased significantly? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) I congratulate the Minister for Justice for responding so quickly to the issue raised yesterday about this tragic incident. Along with the Leader of the Opposition, I also express my sympathy to the family of the person who lost her life. I applaud the minister’s actions in responding quickly by saying that parole will be the subject of very close examination by the Government. We will leave no stone unturned to get to the bottom of what happened. The Leader of the Opposition knows that the legislation that was passed by the Parliament did not relate to serious offenders in the community. The Leader of the Opposition knows that and the people of Western Australia know that; however, he thinks he can score a cheap political point out of these tragic circumstances. It is indicative of his style and approach to the position.
