In an article in the Kalgoorlie Miner of Saturday, 16 August 2003 the Minister for Planning and Infrastructure is quoted as saying in relation to the significant reduction in road funding in the region that “local government is, in fact, getting more.” (1) Was the minister quoted correctly? (2) If so, how does road funding for local government compare between 2002-03 and 2003-04 in - (a) the State; and (b) in each of the local governments within the Mining and Pastoral Region? The PRESIDENT: If the parliamentary secretary has an extensive answer, he can seek leave to table and incorporate the material. Hon KEN TRAVERS

Certainly, Mr President. I always like to keep my answers concise and relevant in accordance with the standing orders. It is a short answer on this occasion. I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) The member will be aware that the minister’s full quote was “local government is, in fact, getting more. The Commonwealth has changed its road funding model - giving less to the State but funding local government directly”. In order to provide the member with a complete and detailed answer to the second part of the question, the member is requested to place it on notice.
