Resources industry—Sexual harassment
594. Ms Libby Mettam to
the Minister for Industrial Relations:
I have a
supplementary question. When can women who work in FIFO expect the government
to implement the remaining seven recommendations, given it has been three years
since the government received the report?
Several members
interjected.
The Speaker: Members! Minister, just wait. Carry on,
minister.

I think that the
member's question really shows the shallow nature of her understanding of some
of these issues. If we want to change the attitudes that lead to bullying and
sexual harassment, or change the extent of sexual assault in workplaces, we
cannot think that one government program or one set of implementing
recommendations—
Ms Libby Mettam interjected.
Ms Simone McGurk: If you would be quiet, member, you
might hear my answer to these questions. They are not issues that are going to
be turned around overnight. They are issues that have been a long time in the
making and will take some dedicated and persistent effort to turn around. This
government has been committed to do that.
I again repeat my
criticism of the member and the opposition. In the time that I have been the
minister, since March this year, I have not had one question about any of these
issues.
Several members
interjected.
Ms Libby Mettam: Coercive control!
The Speaker: Members! Member for Vasse!
Ms Simone McGurk: We are not talking about coercive
control. We are talking about workplace safety for women, whether they work in
mining or any other industry. The member has shown no interest until there is a
media story that she can take advantage of.
