Elective surgery
582. Hon Nick Goiran to
the parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the director
general's reported comments that:
… WA Health is proactively
rescheduling some non-urgent surgeries in the metropolitan area …
(1) Will this in practice result in category 2 and
3 operations being cancelled and impacted patients being provided a new date
for their surgery?
(2) Who issued the directive to cancel these
elective surgeries?
(3) Will the minister table the document
communicating that directive?
(4) How many operations scheduled for today have
been delayed as a result of the directive and how many are expected to be
cancelled over the next few days?
(5) Can the minister confirm that the 413 hours of
ambulance ramping for the 24-hour period on Monday was the single worst day
recorded in WA's history?

I thank the Leader
of the Opposition for some notice of the question. The following answer has
been provided by the Minister for Health.
(1) WA Health is prioritising urgent patient care
in this time of unprecedented demand by rescheduling some elective surgeries in
the metropolitan area, which includes category 2 and 3 procedures. As per ordinary
practice, affected patients will be contacted and rebooked as soon as possible.
(2)–(3) The decision to reschedule some
elective procedures due to demand pressures across the system was made by the Director
General of the Department of Health in consultation with chief executives and
communicated verbally.
(4) Elective surgeries may be rescheduled to
manage demand and prioritise urgent patient care.
(5) Given unprecedented demand, there was a high
level of ambulance ramping on Monday.
