AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for this question. (1) The Australian Opera Studio has received no state government funding through portfolios under the control of the Minister for Culture and the Arts. The Minister for Culture and the Arts is unable to comment on funding from other state government agencies. (2) The Australian Opera Studio is eligible to apply for financial assistance through the arts grants program of the Department of Culture and the Arts. (3) (a) In 2005, the West Australian Opera received $1.275 million in general purpose funding, $50 000 in special purpose funding, and additional program support of $100 000. (b) Funding is directed to support the company’s annual performance, touring and development programs. All the funding is directed to West Australian Opera stand-alone initiatives or partnership initiatives with other organisations, including the UWA Perth International Arts Festival and Opera Australia. (4) The West Australian Opera provides an annual program of activities for the Western Australian public. Since 2001, the WA Opera has been contracted by the state government to present three main-stage productions and one community event per annum. Since 2001, the WA Opera has produced 15 main-stage productions. In 2004, the WA Opera also provided opera-in-education workshops, a young artists’ program and a Christmas chorus concert, and participated in His Majesty’s Theatre’s centenary celebrations. In addition, the West Australian Opera has regularly presented Opera in the Park, undertaken regional touring and participated in co-productions with OzOpera and the UWA Perth International Arts Festival, such as the season of Batavia in 2004. (5) A list of opera productions is tabled. The state government has already arranged a meeting between the WA Opera and the Australian Opera Studio. [See paper 1014.]
