GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS — KIMBERLEY
526. Hon AMBER-JADE SANDERSON to the
minister representing the Minister for Environment:
I refer to reports that coral reefs
off the Kimberley coast have been subject to bleaching caused by global
warming.
(1) Has the
Minister for Environment's agency advised whether these bleaching
events are connected to greenhouse gas emissions?
(2) Has the
agency advised the minister whether the Ningaloo Reef is also at risk because
of these greenhouse gas emissions?
(3) If yes to
(2), what strategies is the minister implementing to reduce greenhouse gas
emissions in Western Australia?
(4) Does the
minister support Labor's 50 per cent renewable energy target by 2030 as
one strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions?

I thank the member for some notice
of this question.
(1) No.
(2) No.
(3)–(4) It
is the state government's view that the development of mitigation
policies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions will most appropriately occur at
the national level. This will allow measures to be designed in the most
economically efficient manner. Design and implementation of measures to limit
greenhouse gas emissions, including targets for renewable energy, are the
responsibility of the Australian government and the federal Parliament.
