GINDALBIE METALS LTD — ROYALTY CONCESSION
13. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Did the Premier enclose any
criteria in terms of training or Aboriginal employment to justify this $15 million
taxpayer subsidy?

You are so opposed to development in this state.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Members!
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
There are criteria attached to it, but I state again that it is to be done
project by project.
Mr P. Papalia : Who
decides—you?
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
We are the government.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Members!
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Last time I looked, we are the government; we do decide. When this group over
here was in government, they could not decide anything. That is why they lost
power. We do make decisions as a government. It is a short-term, limited, small
concession to encourage the development of the magnetite industry and the
hundreds of jobs. I remind members opposite that on the same day we opened that
project with 500 new jobs, 500 jobs that had been heavily subsidised on the
east coast were lost. Look at the contrast and look at why Western Australia
goes ahead. When members opposite were in government they could not deal with
that project; it had completely stalled.
