SHARK DRUM
LINE PROGRAM
273. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the
Attorney General representing the Minister for Police:
I refer to the contractor who is
conducting shark drum lining activities in the south west for the government.
(1) What sort
of firearms licence does the contractor have for the firearm he uses on the
drum lining boat?
(2) Please
describe the specific requirements for storing the firearm that the contractor
is required to meet under the licence, including which provisions or schedules
under the Firearms Regulations 1974 apply?
(3) Is the
minister confident that the contractor has been meeting those requirements
since he began drum lining operations in late January?
(4) Is the
minister aware that the contractor has been observed keeping the firearm,
reportedly a .22 calibre rifle, in an unlocked PVC tube on the boat for long
periods while the gun is not in use?
(5) Is the
minister aware that in his letter to the Premier granting an exemption under
the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act to enable drum
lining to occur, the federal Minister for Environment stated that he was
granting the exemption for public safety reasons?
The PRESIDENT : There are a few assertions in that
question.
