QuestionView source ↗
I refer to the statement by the member for Innaloo made in the Legislative Assembly on 24 October 2002 supporting the retention of the proposed Stephenson Highway road reserve that currently exists over the northern section of Bold Park. (1) Does the minister support this statement? (2) If yes to (1), why? (3) If yes to (1), how is the retention of this road reserve compatible with the regional park status of Bold Park? (4) If no to (1), will the minister remove the existing road reserve? (5) If no to (4), why not? Hon GRAHAM GIFFARD
AnswerView source ↗
I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(5) The member for Innaloo is indeed very passionate about Stephenson Highway and his efforts in trying to preserve the reservation and protect the interests of his electorate are to be admired. As the honourable member would appreciate, Stephenson Highway is a very contentious issue and there are strongly divided opinions in the community about the need for such a reservation. The matter has recently been considered by the Western Australian Planning Commission and the recommendation was that at this stage the existing reserve be retained within the metropolitan region scheme. Because of the high level of community interest, it is the minister’s intention that a comprehensive assessment of the Stephenson Highway reservation be pursued, involving extensive community consultation. However, at this time a significant amount of work is being done by the Department for Planning and Infrastructure on road network planning issues, particularly focused on the south metropolitan corridor. The minister, therefore, does not envisage the Stephenson Highway review commencing until at least the latter half of next year.
