865. Hon Giz Watson to the Attorney General representing the Minister for the Environment:
With reference to the national parks and conservation reserves created by the Government in the Kimberley in July 2000 -
Why did CALM mislead the Kimberley Land Council in their letter of July 24 2000 by implying that the vesting of these lands was still to happen by stating on maps provided with that correspondence that these areas were to be reserved under the Lands Administration Act 1997 and vested in the NPNCA, when vesting of these reserves had already taken place on the July 11 2000?

The Minister Replied:
The Department of Conservation and Land Management (CALM) wrote to the Kimberley Land Council on 24 July 200 advising that senior CALM officers would be pleased to meet with the Wanjina/Wunggurr-Willinggin native title claimants to discuss matters of concern to the claimants and CALM.
The map provided by CALM predated the reservation of the Mitchell River and Lawley River National Parks and the Camp Creek, Laterite and King Leopold Range Conservation Parks. The map also predated the 30 June 2000 registration of the Wanjina/Wunggurr-Uunguu native title claim.
CALM did not imply anything other than a desire to meet with the native title claimants and discuss matters of mutual concern.
