A member of parliament questions the Health Minister's decision to hire clinical specialists from the eastern states, arguing it duplicates work already done in the Health 2020 report. The Minister defends the decision by stating the previous government ignored the report and a contemporary review is needed.

I refer the minister to his statement during question time yesterday when he justified the hiring of clinical specialists from the eastern States by saying that the problem has been caused, in part, by the local clinicians and the local hospital managers each looking after their own empires, duplicating services in a wasteful way, and ask - (1) Is the minister aware that the Department of Health, the community, the divisions of general practice, the universities, the medical associations and specialists all worked collaboratively for over two years to produce the Health 2020 report, which recommended, among other things, non-duplication of services in tertiary hospitals, a trauma centre at Royal Perth Hospital, integrated health clinics in suburbs, changes to outpatient services and a whole range of changes to emergency departments and bed ratios? (2) Why is the minister wasting taxpayers’ money on hiring advisers from the eastern States when their recommendations are likely to be exactly the same as those already agreed to by health professionals in this State? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(2) Yes, I am aware. The 2020 report, to which the member referred, was put on the shelf, allowed to gather dust and effectively ignored by the member’s Government. We are looking for a contemporary report on how to best deal with this problem.
