RAVENSTHORPE DISTRICT HOSPITAL
I refer to the minister’s answers in this house following our questions on 17 October 2006 when he said that he was not planning to close any other hospitals in country and rural Western Australia. (1) Can the minister confirm that he plans to close the Ravensthorpe District Hospital within the next few weeks because of a shortage of nurses? (2) Is the minister aware of the important function that the hospital serves, 35 kilometres from the largest open-cut nickel mine in the Southern Hemisphere, with a large residential workforce, which is just coming on line now? (3) Is the minister aware that closing this facility will mean that there is no hospital between Esperance and Albany, a distance of 500 kilometres? (4) Does the minister realise that closing this facility will jeopardise the doctor presence and put further strain on volunteer ambulance staff and the Royal Flying Doctor Service and has the potential to cost lives? Mr J.A. McGINTY

(1)-(4) The answers to the member’s questions are no, yes and not applicable. I remind members that the last time the member for Roe asked me a question, it contained completely false information. He asked me about the shutting down of orthopaedic surgery at Esperance District Hospital. After the member asked that false question, I found out that orthopaedic surgery at Esperance hospital had been expanded. It was the exact opposite of the proposition he put. Has the member for Roe heard another rumour? This time he should get it right.
