ROTTNEST ISLAND —
ASSET MANAGEMENT
835. Ms L. METTAM to the Premier:
I refer to comments of the Rottnest
Island Authority chairman, John Langoulant, last week regarding asset
management —
If
we get to the point of being concerned about all the infrastructure, then we
are really in a different world.
Are the people of Western Australia
living in another world if they expect the board of Rottnest Island to have the
safety of all infrastructure on the island as its highest priority?

I am unaware of the comment but I have
a great deal of respect for John Langoulant. I think his is a very good
appointment to the position of chair of the Rottnest Island Authority board. He
is an eminent Western Australian. He is running the island well considering
that it has infrastructure on the island that is now more than 100 years old;
in fact, from recollection, some of it is 150 years old. It is very old infrastructure
on the island, and obviously keeping up with the maintenance program on the
island is a major task. Fortunately, as best we can in these difficult
circumstances, we are keeping pace with the past spending on repairs and
maintenance. The other point is, in light of what occurred last week, which had
the near capacity to be a tragedy, and I was very concerned about the people
who were on the jetty when that part collapsed, I am very pleased to hear that
it appears to be that they are recovering from what occurred. The other part of
it is—I forget my point, actually. The other point I was going to make
was the first responders did a terrific job in that circumstance and I would
like to thank them for that. Perhaps if the member asks a supplementary, I will
remember the point I was going to make.
