A parliamentary question regarding the applicability of the 'Buy Local' policy to businesses in Joondalup, Wangara, and Wanneroo, and concerns that the policy's metropolitan-wide scope dilutes its local benefit. The Minister responds by outlining the policy's aims and denying awareness of specific concerns, but offers to investigate further if provided with information.

I refer to the Buy Local campaign policy. (1) What particular applicable criteria or issues can assist businesses in the Joondalup, Wangara and Wanneroo areas to benefit from this policy? (2) Is the minister aware of the concern being expressed by members of the local Joondalup, Wangara and Wanneroo business communities, who claim that the policy has little real benefit to these business communities as it is not local-area specific but applies to the total metropolitan area? Hon NICK GRIFFITHS

(1)-(2) I thank the member for some notice of this question. The Government’s Buy Local policy aims to maximise supply opportunities for all competitive local Western Australian businesses when bidding for state government contracts. The policy requires government agencies to adopt a philosophy of buying as close to home as possible while achieving value for money outcomes. The policy provides all businesses within the Perth metropolitan region with an equal opportunity to bid, and, if competitive, win contracts to supply to Government. I am not aware of any concerns currently being expressed by members of the local Joondalup, Wangara and Wanneroo business communities. However, if specific information is provided, I will be happy to look into the issues.
