327. Hon ALISON XAMON to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Attorney General:
(1) Is the
Attorney General aware of any requests by federal or state government
departments or agencies to suppress the testimony of Indonesian nationals
charged with people-smuggling offences?
(2) If yes,
for each request please provide the department or agency making the request and
the reason for the request.

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) The
conduct of proceedings concerning people-smuggling offences is a matter for the
commonwealth Attorney-General and commonwealth prosecuting authorities. The
state Attorney General is not aware of any state department or agency making an
application to suppress the testimony of any Indonesian nationals in
proceedings concerning people-smuggling offences.
(2) Not applicable.
