359. Mr M. McGOWAN to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. The Premier said the stamp
duty for someone buying a house for $500 000 is pretty small. Under his
government's new arrangements, that is $13 433. Does he stand by the
fact that that is pretty small?

The amount of $13 000, in isolation, is a significant amount
of money. If someone is buying a $500 000—a half-million dollar—property,
$13 000 is not a great component of what his or her mortgage will actually be.
Mr M. McGowan : If
they pay that off over many years!
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
Yes, $13 000 —
Mr M. McGowan : Out
of touch!
The SPEAKER :
Leader of the Opposition!
Several members interjected.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
There is no point.
