ECONOMIC REGULATION AUTHORITY — PRISONS
REVIEW
1360. Hon ALANNA CLOHESY to the minister
representing the Treasurer:
(1) How much has
the government budgeted for the Economic Regulation Authority review of
prisons?
(2) Can the
government confirm that it is waiting for the outcome of the ERA review before
making any further decisions about the privatisation of prisons or prison
services?

Thank you, Mr President, I wish you
a happy birthday as well.
I thank the member for some notice
of the question.
(1) The ERA has
the capacity to undertake inquiries using its own resources. It is not
anticipated that there will be a need to use consultants at this stage.
(2) The
Department of Corrective Services is currently examining a broad range of
reform options to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the state's
prison system. The ERA inquiry is one of a number of mechanisms that will be
used to assist in the government's future consideration of reform
options.
