PERTH MAJOR
SPORTS STADIUM — TOTAL COST
421. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Premier:
I refer to the government's proposed Burswood
stadium, and comments made by former Treasurer Porter during the estimates
hearings in relation to the $700 million cost, when he said, ''It is targeted
to be inside that $700 million.''
(1) Is the
Premier aware of any advice that the total cost of the stadium infrastructure
and associated site costs will be significantly more than $700 million?
(2) If yes to (1), what is that amount?
(3) If the Premier is aware of any such advice, why has he
not made that advice public before now?

I am not aware of any such advice, and as the Minister for Sport and Recreation
just made clear, we are working on a budget of $700 million; that is where we
are at. The process is going through each stage and the minister and I expect,
quite shortly, to take to cabinet final proposals for the construction of the
stadium, but that documentation is not yet ready. I am not aware of any
suggestion of a price of $900 million; $700 million is the figure and the
budget the state has allocated.
