Gun laws—Doctors concerns
523. Mr Shane Love to
the Minister for Police:
I have a
supplementary question. The concerns of the Royal Australian College of General
Practitioners are not about IT issues; they are about the health assessment
process, the flawed nature of it and the perverse results that may result from it. Will the minister commit to immediately,
as I have already asked, recommence the health assessment working group?
Mr Paul Papalia: Have you read the report?
Mr Lachlan Hunter: You were dumped as minister!
The Speaker: Member for Central Wheatbelt!

Thanks for your
question, Leader of the National Party. I actually mentioned all the ways I am
engaging with stakeholders. In fact, I met in this Parliament building about a
month ago with members of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
They brought up the same issues that they raised at the committee inquiry, and
I have already agreed and that process has begun to take on board their
recommendations, their ideas, to improve that situation as well.
Mr Shane Love: They didn't seem convinced on
Tuesday when they were here.
The Speaker: Leader of the National Party, you have
asked the question.
Mr Reece Whitby: I have sat down with members of the Royal
Australian College of GPs—in fact, I have had two meetings with them,
from memory—and they put up their suggestions on how things can be done
in terms of helping GPs out in the community. I have agreed to look at those,
and we are working together at this moment, and police are involved, too. These
are commonsense, practical ways we can improve the system. But, please, do not
lose sight of the bigger picture here. Do not lose sight of what the majority
of Western Australians want: safer gun laws. These are good laws. They are
achieving good outcomes. They are already keeping us safer. Do not go the cheap
road—the low road. Join us.
