I refer the Premier to the recent announcement that the State Government will provide $1.5 million funding towards the redevelopment of the Albany Leisure and Aquatic Centre. (1) Is the Premier aware that the Government’s failure to meet the funding request of the City of Albany for stage 1 of this project has resulted in a shortfall of over $500 000? (2) Is the Premier also aware that as a result of this funding shortfall some components of the project will have to be cut or deferred? (3) Will the Premier admit that the ad hoc nature of this announcement and the underfunding of the project reflects yet another attempt at vote grabbing without proper consideration for the real needs of the Albany region? (4) Does the Premier agree that Albany deserves a full 50-metre pool? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(4) I was interested to hear the Minister for Police giving her answer to the last question. It sounded as though she was referring to a country-centric Government in Western Australia. We will be saying more about that when we debate the matter of public importance. The maximum grant available through the community sporting and recreation facilities fund is $1.5 million. The member for Albany recently announced that the city had secured a grant of $1.5 million. Although the city highlighted there was a shortage in the requested amount, it was advised all along by the local member that $1.5 million was the full amount it could receive under CSRFF guidelines. The proposed additional pool will provide for leisure swimmers who are not adequately accommodated for in the existing facility. The existing pool facility is being used to its maximum capacity, and demand for water space is exceeding supply. There was no alternative funding source identified for the City of Albany for this project. That is a commitment to the people of Albany on this project at the maximum of the CSRFF in Western Australia. It is a great scheme. It is providing funds for communities throughout Western Australia to upgrade sporting facilities and to make sure that communities have available first-class swimming pools, gymnasiums and sporting ovals so the great talent that exists throughout regional Western Australia can be fully reflected in the performance of our young athletes. It will also ensure that citizens in the wider community will have leisure and recreational opportunities. We have nothing whatsoever to answer for in this question. Mr P.D. Omodei interjected. The SPEAKER: Order! Member for Warren Blackwood. Dr G.I. GALLOP: I am very pleased with the work that is going on, with the local member pressing the Government on these issues. As I said, this is the maximum grant available and it was provided to the City of Albany.
