NORTHAM SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL - CEILING COLLAPSE
I draw the minister’s attention to the fact that a stairwell ceiling collapsed out of school hours over the long weekend at the Northam Senior High School. Thankfully, no-one was injured in the incident because, obviously, no-one was there. Further to the problem, the scaffolding and repair equipment had to be accessed from the metropolitan area at a cost of $8 000. The equipment has to be returned to the metropolitan area. (1) Will the minister guarantee that the Department of Education and Training will inspect all areas of the school to ascertain the safety of all ceilings before the scaffolding and repair materials are returned to Perth? (2) Will the department meet the costs involved in the repairs and a further inspection, as I am advised that the school has been told to fund it from its own budget, which is not significant enough? Mr N.R. MARLBOROUGH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. As an aside, I indicate how pleased I am to be in the chamber with at least one person supporting me wholeheartedly. I am referring to my beautiful wife in the gallery. (1)-(2) As indicated by the member, the ceiling collapsed. It has been replaced. A further three stairwell ceilings will be replaced in the next four days. Mr M.W. Trenorden : At whose cost? Mr N.R. MARLBOROUGH : The ceilings in the other school buildings will be inspected by 16 March. If they are not, I would like the member to come back to me and let me know. The cost will be carried by the Department of Education and Training and not the school.
