Question regarding the planning and budgeting for a north-south bypass in Geraldton, specifically concerning the rezoning of a rail reserve. The Minister's response outlines existing plans and studies, but indicates no current funding for the Rudds Gully Brand Highway realignment and further planning for the Webberton Road extension is contingent on demonstrated need.

I refer to the minister’s answer to question without notice 930 of Tuesday, 29 November 2005 about the rezoning of the rail reserve from Meru, which crosses the Mullewa Road and extends to the crossover of the North West Coastal Highway in Geraldton. (1) What planning has been done to identify a north-south bypass for Geraldton? (2) When will these plans be completed and budgeted for? Hon ADELE FARINA

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(2) The Western Australian Planning Commission’s 1999 Geraldton region plan consists of the Rudds Gully Brand Highway realignment and the Webberton Road extension. Planning work on the Rudds Gully Brand Highway realignment has been done, but the project is not currently funded. More planning on the Webberton Road extension will be done when a need is established. In this regard, the Western Australian Planning Commission and the Main Roads 2002 Geraldton primary north-south road alignment selection study identifies and evaluates options for a regional north-south road north of the southern transport corridor and recommends a freight network review. More planning on the Webberton Road extension will be done when a need is established.
