GERALDTON POLICE AND COMMUNITY YOUTH CENTRE
I refer to recent revelations that the Geraldton Police and Community Youth Centre may be in imminent danger of closing due to financial difficulties and to the member for Geraldton’s comments in Monday’s The Geraldton Guardian that — If I shouted out about this to the Premier, he probably wouldn’t listen, I know him pretty well. Does this government support the ongoing operation of PCYCs in regional Western Australia and recognise their important role in targeting youth at risk? Mr C.J. BARNETT

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for Girrawheen for the question. The government supports PCYCs. I have one in my electorate and it does a great job. Most of the kids who go there probably come from outside my electorate, but it is strongly supported. The member for Geraldton has spoken to me about the Geraldton PCYC. Mr E.S. Ripper : Did he shout? Mr C.J. BARNETT : No, he did not need to shout. The member for Geraldton is working hard, along with the police minister, to ensure that that PCYC continues. Some PCYCs face financial difficulties. Some of them have old facilities. Some of them have issues with the number of kids attending. I think that in a city such as Geraldton the PCYC is an essential part of the social infrastructure and an essential part of opportunities for young kids. We will continue to support the PCYC and the schools, as the Minister for Education mentioned. It is part of the job of the local member to bring forward the case of the PCYC, and the member for Geraldton is doing that.
