WORKSAFE —
J&P GROUP PTY LTD
385. Hon KATE DOUST to the
Minister for Commerce:
I refer to the
corporate media statement issued by the Department of Commerce entitled ''Scrap
metal yard fined $80,000 over worker death''.
(1) Apart from the fine, what other actions
has the department taken to ensure that J&P Group Pty Ltd provide a safe
work environment for its employees?
(2) What actions, prior to the accident,
were taken to ensure that J&P Group Pty Ltd were complying with onsite
safety requirements?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this
question.
(1) No other
actions, as the WorkSafe division of the Department of Commerce selected the
enforcement action considered appropriate, which was prosecution, in accordance
with its compliance policy.
(2) Prior to
the accident, WorkSafe conducted four investigations in relation to workplaces
of the J&P Group Pty Ltd. WorkSafe also issued a safety and health alert to
the general community in 2000 in relation to the hazards from coiled steel at
scrap-metal yards.
