COMMUNITY SPORTING CLUB EQUIPMENT SUBSIDY SCHEME
518. Mr V.A. CATANIA to the Minister for
Sport and Recreation:
Many of our clubs have been
successful in receiving royalties for regions funds through the community
sporting club equipment subsidy scheme. Can the minister please advise the
house on the outcome of the most recent funding round?

I thank the member for his question.
I know that sporting clubs and families throughout his electorate and right
across Western Australia will benefit from these two new schemes. In 2013, I
launched two funding schemes under the banner of the supporting community sport
initiative—namely, the community sporting club equipment subsidy scheme
and the athlete travel subsidy scheme. They were initially rolled out in
regional WA with $2 million of funding from royalties for regions. The response
to the schemes in country WA was absolutely outstanding and the feedback so
strong that we have now introduced it into the metropolitan area through our
sport and recreation funding. The equipment scheme provides sporting clubs with
$500 assistance towards the purchase of shared equipment for the club—that
is, equipment that is accessible to all the members of the club for the
purposes of training and competition. The travel subsidies are designed to ease
the financial burden on families who have young athletes aspiring to represent
their region, state or country. The travel subsidy offers out-of-pocket
expenses and accommodation costs. It does not cover an athlete's costs
but it helps out those families as a subsidy towards the athlete attending
training camps and competitions at a regional, state, national and even
international level. I am sure every parent here would agree that the costs
associated with giving our kids the opportunity to participate in sports,
particularly if we have talented kids, become quite considerable and sometimes
it is a big expense for families. These schemes are a way of helping them out.
The most recent round of funding saw
229 regional clubs and 239 metropolitan clubs receive a total of $234 000
towards shared equipment. Just to give members an idea, a few of the clubs that
received funds were the Tom Price Netball Association, the Kununurra Squash
Club and the Mindarie Little Athletics Club. The athlete travel subsidy scheme
supported 129 regional families and 486 metropolitan families coming from an
amazing cross-section of sports right across Western Australia such as hockey,
polocrosse, tenpin bowling, surfing and baseball, to name a few examples. This
is a real example of the Liberal‑National government recognising the
importance of community and grassroots sport and what it delivers and
supporting it. Our very successful KidSport program has been getting kids,
sometimes at-risk kids, into sporting clubs. These schemes are another way of
continuing to support that program. They take the next step and support clubs
and families and remove the barriers to participation that sometimes exist.
Applications for the next round of equipment grants open on 16 September, and
the next round of travel subsidies opens on 12 August. I really encourage
members to promote these programs because they really make a difference and hit
the spot.
