WESTERN ROCK LOBSTER INDUSTRY — REFORMS —
GREG POLAND
151. Mr Z.R.F. KIRKUP to the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the minister's
answer yesterday to questions by the member for Geraldton, in which the
minister stated he had no real engagement with Mr Greg Poland over his plan to
nationalise the crayfishing industry, but subsequently admitted that he was
intrinsically involved in the implementation. Now that the minister has had 24 hours
to get his story straight, can the minister clarify whether Mr Poland had
either no involvement with his crayfish plan, or was intrinsically involved?

That is not what I said yesterday at
all. In answer to the question from the member for Geraldton, who is not here
today, I explained the contact that —
Mr V.A. Catania interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for North
West Central, I know that it will never happen, but just sit and listen.
Mr D.J. KELLY : I explained in
some detail the contact that Mr Poland had with my office prior to the
announcement we made on 7, 8 or 9 December, after concluding an agreement with
the Western Rock Lobster Council. If the member wants to go back and look at
the Hansard of yesterday, I went through in a fair amount of detail what
contact he had with my office beforehand, before that announcement was made,
and that pretty clearly showed that he did not have any real involvement in the
formulation of that policy. I also, in answer to the question, said that the
restaurant where we made the one media event was a restaurant that was owned by
him at Hillarys. That is all on the Hansard of yesterday. The member
should read it.
