Following the closure of Noalimba Accommodation and Conference Centre, a low-cost facility where many country schools and other groups stay when visiting Perth on educational and sporting trips, will the minister advise - (1) Is a similar low-cost facility now available for these groups to utilise? (2) If not, will the Government offer subsidies to enable these groups to cover the increased costs of alternative accommodation to enable them to continue these important trips and excursions? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

I thank the member for Narrogin for the question. Mr T.K. Waldron: Wagin. Mr A.J. CARPENTER: Narrogin is on my mind because of the magnificent facilities that the National Party has managed to engineer there. It is quite unbelievable - speaking about doing deals. I also thank the member for Wagin for providing me with a little memento of my time in Narrogin. I think I feature in about five photos in The Observer . The education awards night was wonderful. What a great community that area has. Mr P.D. Omodei interjected. Mr A.J. CARPENTER: I am prepared to take that on as long as that photograph of the member for Warren-Blackwood and me, in that compromising position, is not published. We both know about that from my little trip down to the member’s neck of the woods. (1)-(2) The Noalimba Accommodation and Conference Centre will be closed because occupancy rates are virtually negligible. The previous Government made a decision to close it, but never acted on the decision. The Noalimba hostel, which is in the Bull Creek area - Mr J.H.D. Day interjected. Mr A.J. CARPENTER: No, it did not have the guts to close it. I do not think the member for Murdoch wanted it closed. It is in his electorate, in the Bull Creek area. It is an old 1960s migrant hostel. It is totally unsuited to its purpose. The previous Government initially made the right decision. There are six or seven other sport and recreation camps in Western Australia. Many of them are in the metropolitan area. They are education camps that all operate at competitive costs. As advocates of the free market model, members opposite must agree with me that when the community says that it does not want to use a facility such as Noalimba anymore, something must be done about it. The Government has had the courage to do it.
