ASSET SALES — TAB
441. Mr M. McGOWAN to the minister
representing the Minister for Racing and Gaming:
I refer to confirmation by the
Minister for Racing and Gaming that the state government is considering
allowing Keno and virtual horseracing machines outside Crown Casino as part of
the proposed sale of the Western Australian TAB.
(1) Do Keno
machines and electronic virtual horseracing machines require punters to put
money into the machine, and can punters lose their money?
(2) Is the
minister considering allowing these machines in all TAB agencies, including
PubTABs and clubs across regional Western Australia?
(3) Has the
minister, his office or the department discussed the introduction of these
machines with potential buyers or interested parties in relation to the TAB
sale?
(4) If so, which parties have these
discussions been held with?
(5) Has the
minister, his office or the department consulted Crown Casino about the
expansion of the Keno and virtual horseracing machines; and, if so, what was
the response?

I thank the Leader of the Opposition
for the question and also for some notice, and I will just read out the
response from the minister in the other place.
(1) Keno and
electronic virtual horseracing games operate in a similar manner, in that a player
makes a bet selection and can win or lose based on the outcome.
(2) The racing industry
has advocated for the expansion of these products into TAB agencies to help
support the Western Australian racing industry. The Minister for Racing and
Gaming is considering the views of the racing industry, but any decision would
require cabinet approval.
(3) Yes.
(4) Discussions
have been held with the Western Australian Racing Representative Group and
Racing and Wagering Western Australia.
(5) The minister
has had a preliminary discussion with representatives from Crown Casino about
Crown's position. The minister and Crown agreed to have further
discussions if this matter progresses. Any amendment to the casino state
agreement must be agreed to by the minister and the casino licensee.
