I refer to the announcement of South West 24 and ask - (1) Given that another 22-year-old south west man took his life last week, why is South West 24 taking until May to be up and running? (2) A large number of males in the south west around the ages of 22 and 23 have committed suicide - an alarming amount in recent months. The Premier has announced that this telephone service will be available 24 hours a day. This service seems to be needed as of now. Has a date been confirmed for when this service will be in use? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the honourable member for some notice of this question. (1) Prior to the introduction of the South West 24 telephone support services in May, there is a requirement for a period of planning that will include recruitment and training of the mental health professionals involved, communication and liaison with key service providers such as general practitioners and police services, development of central policies and protocols to support the service, and resolution of essential technical and communication systems. (2) The current target date for the full implementation of the 24-hour/7 day a week telephone support service is 5 May 2003.
