I refer to the government’s incomprehensible decision to give away the iconic Western Australian event Rally Australia, which has generated over $200 million in economic benefits for the Western Australian economy. (1) Is the Premier aware that the Cystic Fibrosis Association of WA has become reliant on the event, raising over $60 000 from auctioning rally memorabilia over the past six years? (2) Will the Premier commit to continuing Rally Australia and overrule his minister’s decision; and, if not, will he commit to compensating the Cystic Fibrosis Association of WA and the other charities for the financial impact of his government’s ill-advised decision? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(2) I stand by the decision that has been made to move on from Rally Australia. From time to time, all governments face circumstances in which decisions have to be made so that the government can move on to something different. There is no doubt that Rally Australia no longer delivers a sufficient return to Western Australian taxpayers. When compared with other events, it can be seen that Western Australia can do a lot better. The money will not be lost from the tourism or events budgets; the money will be spent on new events to attract more revenue for Western Australia. I fully stand behind the decision of the minister on this. It is a good move to go forward. The government will be in the marketplace looking for new events for Western Australia. I am not aware of the issue about the Cystic Fibrosis Association. I will take that part of the question on notice and look at the issues raised by the member. I will get back to him on that question.
