(1) Is the Deputy Premier aware that Edward Roe wrote to him on behalf of the Walman Yawuru group of Broome on 27 November last year about compulsory acquisition notices for the Broome area, in which Mr Roe advised that: first, the Walman Yawuru people are the traditional owners of the Broome area; secondly, the Walman Yawuru people are not represented by the Rubibi or the Kimberley Land Council; and, thirdly, the Walman Yawuru people want to meet with him to discuss development issues facing Broome? (2) Why has the Deputy Premier not replied to the above letter in the past four months? (3) Does the Deputy Premier intend replying to the above letter? (4) If the Deputy Premier does not intend replying to the above letter, what is his reason for not doing so? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The Deputy Premier has provided the following reply - (1) Yes. (2) Mr Roe’s letter was written in response to the issuing of certain future act notices and he asserts that the State should be dealing with the Walman Yawuru people exclusively in relation to development in Broome. The Walman Yawuru people do not have a registered claim over the relevant land and, therefore, do not have any future act procedural rights in respect of the notices under the Commonwealth’s Native Title Act 1993. The competing claims of the Rubibi group and the Walman Yawuru to native title rights and interests over the Broome area and its surrounds are presently before the court. Careful consideration has been given to Mr Roe’s letter on behalf of the Walman Yawuru people and a response will be provided to Mr Roe in the near future. (3) Yes. (4) Not applicable.
