I refer to the delayed payments to the Bridgetown and 13 other St John Ambulance centres, which I inquired about on 28 April. The response given was that the South West Area Health Service had not been formally notified of St John Ambulance’s 77 per cent increase in fees. (1) In dollar terms, what does the 77 per cent increase per kilometre amount to? (2) In dollar terms, what were the payments per kilometre prior to the increase? (3) Why was there such a huge increase? (4) When was the government advised of the impending increase by St John Ambulance? Hon SUE ELLERY

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) For the financial year 2004-05 the amount is $125 000. The full-year increase for the South West Area Health Service in the 2005-06 financial year is calculated to be $260 000. (2) The rate has been increased from $1.80 per kilometre for the first 100 kilometres, and $1.60 per kilometre thereafter to a flat rate of $3.20. (3) St John Ambulance indicated the fee increase was required to assist in relieving some of the pressure on its volunteers as a result of long-distance road transports in the country. (4) The chief executive officer of the South West Area Health Service was advised of the increase through correspondence dated 31 January 2005.
