I thank the member for Bunbury for
his question and also for his significant leadership at a local level in
steering the community through the challenges of getting an effective
waterfront development in Bunbury —
Mr
D.A. Templeman interjected.

government through the royalties for regions program.

The
SPEAKER : Member for Collie–Preston, I call you to order for the
first time. Member for Mandurah, I call you for the second time.
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : The member for Bunbury has taken the issue from people
protesting in the streets of Bunbury about development through to having full
support for this significant development opportunity that will unlock the
future potential of the Bunbury waterfront. I was down there on 28 September
and I always feel very welcome going down to Bunbury. The member for Bunbury
invited me down there to help unveil the new design plans for the Dolphin
Discovery Centre. The Dolphin Discovery Centre is, of course, a key plank—a
$12.3 million project funded by royalties for regions for the first stage of
the waterfront development.
Several members interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you; carry on.
Mr
D.T. REDMAN : Of course, the development commission plays a strong role
because it is strongly supported by royalties for regions, which is a Liberal–National
government policy. We know what this government is effective in doing. It was
fantastic to be down there to see the unveiling of the plans. In themselves,
the plans are iconic. I talked to a number of volunteers. There are a couple of
hundred volunteers and about a hundred of them come from the local community.
Mr
P. Papalia interjected.
The SPEAKER : Enough, member for Warnbro.
Mr D.T. REDMAN : Interestingly, about a hundred of them
came from overseas. They came that far to get involved with research and
interact with dolphins on the foreshore. Plans have now been unveiled for what
will be a fantastic, iconic facility that will support the growth and
development of Bunbury. It will be an attraction in itself. It is not good
enough to just have people be able to access dolphins go out into the wild;
there are also things like 3D technology. A person can put a little scope on
their head so they can swim with the dolphins while they are inside the centre.
Everyone will get an experience out of this. The project will be outstanding.
It will unlock huge potential. We are very, very proud of what the government
has done in a significant city. The leadership shown by the member for Bunbury
has been fantastic. Once again, it has been supported by the royalties for
regions program and the Liberal–National government is delivering in
regional Western Australia.
