GASCOYNE DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION, CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
In the minister’s answer to a previous question I asked today, relating to the departure of the chief executive officer of the Gascoyne Development Commission, he stated that he had personally encouraged the CEO to discuss a management-initiated retirement package with the director general of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. Will the minister explain why he encouraged the CEO to discuss the package with the director general of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet? Hon TOM STEPHENS

The Leader of the Opposition has not correctly relayed to the House the advice that I gave in my previous answer. Ms Joan Roberts was appointed on 18 May 1998 to the position of director of the Gascoyne Development Commission on a five-year term. That position does not directly come under the jurisdiction of the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal. The remuneration and terms and conditions of employment for that position are determined by the Minister for Public Sector Management. In late March, discussions were held between Ms Roberts and the director general of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet regarding her role as director of the Gascoyne Development Commission and future opportunities that were available to her. Subsequently, Ms Roberts submitted a proposal for termination of her contract. Her proposal was accepted and the Premier approved a management-initiated retirement package. I am advised that Ms Roberts will leave her position on 28 June 2002. She is currently on paid leave.
