The President : Thank you, members! I am sure the member on his
feet is confident in his own pronunciation.
Hon Matthew Swinbourn: Yes, that is right. Thank you,
President.
The woylie population within the
sanctuary was estimated at approximately 300 to 350 individuals in 2022 and
2023 and fell to approximately 200 animals in 2024.
(2) There were no woylie translocations from the
Perup sanctuary in 2023, 2024 or 2025, although there is an approved
translocation plan that allows take of up to 60 animals from the Tone-Perup
Nature Reserve, inside and outside of the Perup sanctuary. At this stage, it is
not expected that any animals will need to be taken from within the sanctuary
under this approved plan.
(3) Section 38 of the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 provides for
any person to nominate a native species for listing as a threatened species in
a particular category. If a nomination is received for listing another native species found in the same sanctuary, it will be
considered in accordance with the processes established in the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 ministerial guidelines
1 and 2 .
(4) Woylies from the Perup sanctuary have
contributed to several multisource translocations around the country, improving
the genetic diversity of those translocated populations. Some of the
populations that were founded with Perup sanctuary animals have now become
source populations for further translocations of the species. Excellent
question, member.
