QuestionView source ↗

I refer to the minister’s claim that the $2 million scheme to reduce government dental clinic waiting lists by using private dentists, announced by the Premier in February, has been a success. (1) Is the minister aware that the scheme places a $600 cap on the amount of private treatment for each eligible public patient and that this is totally inadequate to cover the severe dental needs of many people on the Government’s waiting list? (2) Is the minister also aware that the heads of unit at government dental clinics advise that they are already treating patients who were taken off the waiting list under the scheme and, because of incomplete treatment, are already back on the government waiting list? (3) Will he explain why a constituent of mine who is in the gallery, Mr Noel Davies, who is a patient of the Warwick Dental Clinic, has been waiting for extensive treatment for two years and still does not know when he will have his dentures fitted? Mr J.A. McGINTY

I thank the member for Carine for some notice of the third part of that question, which I am able to answer. (3) On receiving some notice of the question, I checked with Dr David Neesham, the head of Dental Health Services, who advised me that Mr Davies is No 16 on the wait list at the Warwick Government Dental Clinic. He will accordingly have his treatment commenced within the month. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas: Within the month? Mr J.A. McGINTY: Within the month. Mr D.F. Barron-Sullivan: He has been told that before. Mr J.A. McGINTY: Has he? Mr D.F. Barron-Sullivan: And he keeps being put back. Mr J.A. McGINTY: Come back in a month’s time if it has not happened. Ms K. Hodson-Thomas: If it does not happen in a month’s time, I will be here. Mr J.A. McGINTY: I would expect the member for Carine to be here as well. However, the advice that I have received is that being No 16 on the list, Mr Davies’ turn has now been reached and his treatment will commence within the month. The list at Warwick is unacceptably long and, as the member for Carine has quite rightly said during budget estimates and on other occasions, staffing issues have contributed to that list. We have spent quite a deal of that $2 million engaging the private dental profession in Western Australia to come in and pick up the level of care when we have not been able to do it directly as a government provider. However, I have been assured that Mr Davies’ treatment will commence within the month, as his turn has now been reached. (1)-(2) I was unaware that the member intended to ask these questions. I will get a detailed response to them, which they require, and provide it to the member today.
