CANCER — PALLIATIVE TREATMENT
507. Hon Dr BRIAN WALKER to the Leader of the House
representing the Minister for Health:
I refer the minister to the study
undertaken last year by Mater Hospital in Brisbane, in conjunction with the
University of Queensland, suggesting that CBD oil alone is not an effective
palliative treatment for patients with advanced cancer and that a THC element
must also be present.
(1) How many Western
Australians receive a cancer diagnosis each year and how many of those cases
are terminal within five years of the initial diagnosis?
(2) What percentage,
if any, of palliative treatments currently on offer in Western Australia
consist of CBD oil alone?
(3) Given the
need to enhance palliative care treatments across Australia, what is the
McGowan government doing to improve our knowledge of the role that cannabis can
potentially play in its treatment?

The answer is that it will take more
time to get the answer, but I point out to the honourable member that part (1)
of his question is: how many Western Australians receive a cancer diagnosis
each year and how many of those cases are terminal within five years of the
initial diagnosis? In a four-hour turnaround, that is an enormous amount of
information to gather. The answer is that an answer will be provided to the
member on Thursday, 18 May 2023.
