I refer to a recent Access Economics report on the $1.2 billion Australian cruise industry, which showed that the economic contribution of the cruise ship industry to the Western Australian economy, more than doubled in the 2007-08 financial year to be over $21 million compared to the previous year ($9.2million), generating 113 full time equivalent jobs in that 12 month period alone, with further substantial growth expected in the near future, and I ask -
(1) Despite these figures, does the Minister agree that, ‘the investment returns may not currently justify major investment in this area (cruise ships), beyond that which already exists,’ as stated on Tourism Western Australia’s corporate website?
(2) If no to (1), will the Minister ask Tourism WA to formulate policy that will facilitate the continued growth of the cruise ship industry in Western Australia?
(3) If yes to (2), when will the Minister release a plan to further develop the cruise sector business in Western Australia?
