VOICE TO PARLIAMENT
1254. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the Leader of the House representing
the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
reported comments on 16 October 2023 that establishing an Indigenous voice to
the WA Parliament is ''not on our agenda''.
(1) Does the
Premier recall that in 2021 his predecessor repeatedly said that changing the
electoral laws was not on the agenda, only to do the opposite within months?
(2) Does the
Premier recall that in February this year, Minister Sanderson said that she was
''certainly'' in favour of creating a Voice to WA Parliament?
(3) When was
the last occasion that the Premier discussed the creation of a Voice with
Minister Sanderson?
(4) Has the Premier ever been
briefed on the creation of a Voice to the WA Parliament or similar?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) As
the Premier stated on 16 October 2023, the government has no plans for an
Indigenous Voice to the state parliament.
The WA government has the Aboriginal
Advisory Council of Western Australia in place. It is being strengthened and we
will continue to work with the council to ensure that it can provide advice on
behalf of Aboriginal people on matters relating to our state government.
