Police Staff actual employment is above approved strength due to the allocation of Cadets to the Districts, and contract staff employed to replace other staff on leave.

The actual number of police officers working in each police district on 1 September 2008 is not available due to a number of reasons including (but not limited to) weekly leave, training courses, other paid leave and sick leave. These forms of absence are recorded at a number of locations and not in a manner that allows the preparation of a complete and accurate response.
District and Station/Unit mangers monitor these absences and have the capacity to deploy staff within their areas to ensure that an effective policing service is maintained.
