I thank Hon Ray Halligan for his question. The Department of Housing and Works advises as follows: January 2007, 18 846 applications; February 2007, 15 348 applications; March 2007, 14 938 applications; April 2007, 15 372 applications; May 2007, 15 819 applications; June 2007, 15 438 applications; and July 2007, 15 651 applications. The figure for August is not yet available. It is worthy of note that as at 30 June 2001, there were 15 584 applications. Social housing is being provided in an environment of increasing demand and challenging housing market conditions, coupled with declining commonwealth funding in real terms. In the 2007-08 state budget, the government committed an additional $417 million over four years for social and affordable housing, and to deliver at least 1 000 extra social housing dwellings over the next four years.
