I refer to the grant offered by the Minister for Education to the City of Stirling for the building of recreational facilities to replace the now demolished Scarborough Senior High School gymnasium and swimming pool. (1) What terms or conditions apply to this grant offer to ensure that the grant will be spent on replacement facilities located in the proximity of the Scarborough community? (2) Will the Minister for Education agree to table the terms and conditions that apply to this grant offer? (3) If not, why not? Hon BARRY HOUSE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)-(3) Agreement has been reached between the Minister for Education and the City of Stirling that a grant of $1.3m will be paid to the city from the proceeds of the sale of the old Scarborough Senior High School site. The city has agreed to use these funds to provide additional recreational facilities within its boundaries. Originally the ageing recreational facilities at the high school were to have been gifted to the City of Stirling for continued community use, but the cost of upgrading was greater than the replacement cost. The grant will enable new facilities to be provided. The only condition on this grant is that it comes from the proceeds of the sale of the site rather than from the Education Department's budget.
