PUBLIC HOUSING
If this state government is committed to providing more inner-city public housing, what has the state government done recently to achieve this goal and provide more public and affordable housing throughout Western Australia? Mrs M.H. ROBERTS

I thank the member for Perth for the question. I suspect he knows the answer to at least part of the question. Only yesterday I had the opportunity to meet on a site running between Fitzgerald Street and Pendal Lane in West Perth that the Department for Housing and Works has purchased for affordable housing. It is a $2.8 million investment to purchase a lot of 2 350 square metres. The final design of the complex will be important to the ultimate cost and number of units, but we are anticipating - Mr T. Buswell : How much is it going to cost? The SPEAKER : Member for Vasse! Mrs M.H. ROBERTS : We anticipate having a total of 43 units; 24 will be two-bedroom units, 19 will be one-bedroom units and there will be two commercial units on Fitzgerald Street. The total cost is some $15 million. This land purchase is part of our wider land acquisition program. Despite what members opposite say, the Carpenter government will invest $83 million this financial year to buy land for public and affordable housing. There is more land for public and affordable housing in West Swan, Broome, Albany, Hammond Park, Beeliar, Butler, Clarkson, Dalyellup, Ellenbrook, Wandina and Wellard. That is in addition to the $42 million the government invested last year in purchasing individual group and broad hectare sites in places such as Joondalup, East Perth, Busselton, Clarkson, Geraldton and a number of other locations. There is more. This year, a further $32.5 million will be invested to buy suitable established properties throughout Western Australia. When combined with last year’s commitment, 229 public housing properties worth nearly $57 million will have been purchased. It is important that we continue to have public housing in inner-city areas where people can access the services that are more likely to be situated in the inner city and where they have good access to transport, local hospitals and medical services and, of course, where they have an excellent member of Parliament.
