STOP-AND-SEARCH LAWS
593. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer the minister to the Labor
government's proposed stop-and-search laws to crack down on knife
crime.
(1) Has the proposed legislation
been drafted?
(2) If no to (1), has the drafting
commenced; and, if so, when did it begin?
(3) If no to (1), when will the
drafting commence?
(4) When is it anticipated that the
legislation will be introduced into Parliament?

I thank the Leader of the Opposition
for some notice of the question. The following answer is provided on behalf of
the Minister for Police.
(1)–(4) As
announced last week, the Cook government will introduce the toughest knife laws
in the country, giving the WA Police Force greater powers to locate knives and
other concealed weapons to better protect the Western Australian community. The
drafting of bills for introduction is a decision of cabinet and is
cabinet-in-confidence.
